HISTORY
Evelina was born in a place where empires rise and fall thanks to the intervention of witches. While far from all-powerful, witches can have great influence in wars, politics, and royal families thanks to their powers. Depending on who they choose to side with (usually whoever pays them better), witches can change the course of history. They can remove a tyrant from power and bring their champion to the throne. Often witches are the power behind the throne and in years long before Evelina was born, some witches ruled as Queens until their rivals banded together with witch allies of their own to take them down. There is still a power struggle between witches as they fight to be the ruler's favorite and therefore have all the riches and cushy lifestyle that they desire.
In each generation there are only thirteen witches, often born to witches though not necessarily. Evelina's mother Anora was a witch who preferred to stay out of power struggles and lived with her daughter outside a small village in the woods. She tried to steer clear of other witches and simply helped the local villagers with helpful potions and remedies.
When the king's daughter was cursed by a rival king's resident witch and the girl began to waste away, she was brought to Evelina's mother in the hopes a cure could be found. But the problem with curses is they are incredibly hard to break unless certain parameters are met. For instance, to break the curse it must be done at the opposite phase of the moon from when it was cast (a curse cast during a full moon needs to be lifted at a new moon; a curse cast during a waning moon needs to be lifted at a waxing moon), and if you don't know exactly when it was cast, you're screwed. The ingredients used in the curse have opposites that must be collected to break it and again, if you don't know exactly what went into the curse, you're screwed.
Still, Evelina's mother was trying her best to figure out a way to lift the curse when Evelina -- a young child at the time -- touched the princess's hand to comfort her. Immediately the curse broke and the princess felt completely cured. Evelina was a special type of witch that doesn't appear in every generation known as a Curse Breaker. She was pretty much the bane of her fellow witches who involved themselves with those in power, because what good was a curse if it could be lifted with only a touch? Her mother knew this and fled with her daughter to a neighboring land, trying to protect her from other witches who would wish to kill her. With time, Evelina learned herblore and the other spells a witch could use, but her mother made her stay quiet about being a Curse Breaker. Yet she couldn't protect her forever because how could that king and his daughter stay quiet about what had happened? When Evelina was twenty-five, a witch cast a curse on the land that poisoned their water and killed the peoples' livestock. Though she had no training in how to break this curse, she and her mother were eventually found out and the people begged her to do something. So she dipped her hand into the river and the water became drinkable again. She touched the sick livestock and they healed.
Word spread of course, and soon the king's guards were at her door to take Evelina away and lock her in a tower of the castle to be the king's personal Curse Breaker. Her mother tried to fight off the men -- too caught off guard to think clearly about an escape plan -- but since she specialized in healing magic, not magic used in battle, she was struck down and killed in front of her daughter. Evelina managed to think more clearly, casting an illusion to look like she was running off in one direction while she cast invisibility on herself and ran off in the other direction.
For a time she traveled from place to place, never staying more than a night and not stopping in any towns if she could help it. When she did to find food, she made illusions of coins that felt real in the hand and that she dissolved once she was safely away. She was distant and quiet during this time, and she used no noticeable magic and made no potions because there being only thirteen witches in her generation meant she'd be discovered as the Curse Breaker pretty easily. After two years of a nomadic lifestyle, she finally found a place to hop realms via a portal. This was something that only those with the magical sight could see or access, and she had finally discovered one.
At this point she ended up in Delphi, where she lived about three years. She opened a small shop to sell potions and slowly began opening up to people. When a small boy was brought in needing a miracle potion to heal him, Evelina touched his forehead and immediately the boy opened his eyes, completely recovered. No one had realized he'd been cursed, but his parents were stunned at her healing touch. Quickly, Evelina gathered her things and left the realm, afraid of what would happen to her once word spread. This was when she decided to move on once more. She found herself hired as a healer on caravans or other group trips, and though her specialty was potions, she learned quickly to bandage wounds and other useful things. She'd often take over as the party cook as well. This helped her open up and become more friendly, but she still held off of telling the whole truth. Here in a realm far removed from Byblos, she still feared discovery by her rivals.
PERSONALITY
Evelina has a lot of her mother in her. Unlike some other witches, neither she nor her mother cared for riches or power. They received much more satisfaction in helping others and making a positive difference. Her mother raised her to be kind and understanding. She was taught that her magic was a gift, not a right, and she should use her gift for the betterment of all. Her mother taught this to her while stressing that the betterment of all started at the individual. Some witches had good intentions but became too heavily involved in politics in the hopes of making a better world and they soon became corrupted. Evelina was taught to work on a much smaller scale and things would build outward from there.
Evelina was friendly, bright, and inquisitive. She took her mother's magical instruction seriously and rarely ever showed off. Her magic was used to simplify household tasks, help others, and protect herself in case of trouble. While she had several friends, she was seen by them as boring and a stickler for rules as she wouldn't use her magic to entertain them when they asked. Mostly Evelina feared her mother finding out and being disappointed in her. She was incredibly close to her mother and when she died, Evelina felt completely lost and directionless. She loved her mother and didn't want her to have died for nothing if she ended up captured and so she continued on. At this point in her life her personality changed slightly. She was very subdued and tried not to draw attention to herself. Conversations were kept short and she rarely made eye contact. She was completely drawn inward and with no one to talk to and confide in, she would end up having long debates with herself in her head. This led her to overthink things and second guess herself constantly and gave her a drop in confidence.
She didn't like to see people suffer and during her time on the run she felt guilty that she wasn't helping people. There were potions that could cure illnesses or at least ease pains, but she couldn't risk exposing herself as a witch. But the guilt at having the power to help others and not using it ate at her until she decided to leave Byblos for a new realm where she could start over without anyone suspecting she was a Curse Breaker. Her fear over being locked up or killed because of what she was often outweighed the good she wished to do in helping people. Curses ranged from the irritating to the deadly, but in this area Evelina would always err on the side of caution to keep from exposing herself.
In Delphi, she slowly settled and let down her guard. She gathered ingredients and began to sell potions to the populace. Evelina was still a little quieter than she'd once been, but she was keen to be friendly and helpful again. She felt so lonely and touch starved that she wished desperately to find someone she could trust enough to allow them to touch her, because her fear of showing her cursebreaking ability meant she shied away from physical contact. The more she talked to others and slowly gave them her trust, the more her confidence returned to her. All that fell apart, however, when she accidentally cured a sick boy that she didn't realize was cursed by just touching him. Paranoid that she would be used, she quickly fled to start over again. She also had to start over with trusting people and opening up. Being hired as a group healer and cook helped with that, but she continued to hold the fear of her cursebreaking becoming known and causing others to treat her differently.
